Auguste Rodin's dynamic and vigorous works, including
the well-known piece, The Thinker (Le Penseur),
had a profound influence on modern sculpture. In
this study for a monument to Balzac, Rodin wraps
his bulky form in a robe and gives it mass and volume.
Rodin chooses to realistically portray French eminent
writer not in formal attire with a ceremonious air,
but absorbed in thought late at night. The monument
measures three meters in height and now stands on
the Montparnasse Boulevard in Paris.
