Marino MARINI

Rider (the town's guardian angel)

Marino Marini, a modern Italian sculptor, pursued "a mounted cavalryman" as his lifework theme.
In Europe there was a tradition to place the statue of a mounted cavalryman in the plaza. You can still see them in many towns. The mounted cavalryman, which had been sculptured to admire a hero and pray for safety of the town, was created by Marini under his new concepts as symbols of the vanity of wars and uncertainty of people living in modern times.
"Mounted Cavalryman (Guardian of the Town)"is one of his best wooden sculptures, of which simple but stable body harmonizes with warm wood material. The work produced soon after the war reflects his hope, reconstruction of his devastated homeland Italy. On the surface of the sculpture, you can see his unique expression of lines and shapes freely drawn or carved irrelevant to the form.
