After leaving Rodin's atelier where he worked as
an assistant for fifteen years, Antoine Bourdelle
gain widespread acclaim when he submitted a large
work "Heracles, the Archer," measuring 250 cm to
the Salon. This small study for the sculpture shows
the same level of accomplishment and skill.
Heracles, the renowned hero in Greek mythology,
was ordered to perform twelve labors. Bourdelle
depicts the sixth labor with vigorous tension at
the moment that Heracles pulls the bow back with
all his strength to release the arrow that will
kill the man-eating birds.
