1887
Ink and pencil on paper
12.5×19.0cm
In 1887, Georges Seurat expressed artificial lights
in the night scene through an oil painting of a
parade of Colvi Circus attracting people's attention
titled "La Parade" (owned by the Metropolitan
Museum of Art). In this "Ensemble," which
is about 1/8 the size of "La Parade" and
is divided into 4 horizontally and 6 vertically
with a pencil, a trombone player, the leader with
a whip, members of the band and audience line up
in order under the gas light. Therefore, this picture,
where almost the same scene is drawn only with minute
ink dots, is one of the last studies for "La
Parade" as the only pointillistic sketch with
its final composition.
