Self-portrait with masks

James Ensor is a Belgian artist, who created peculiar fantasies under the motifs of masks and skeletons. It was late in the 19th century that his creativity had reached its peak.
Above all, this work produced in 1899 is said to be his last masterpiece. So many masks in the picture represent the artistic world and the people in Belgium that did not recognize his talent and kept alienating him. The picture, which clearly shows his offensiveness with striking colors, is now highly evaluated as a front-running work of the paintings in the 20th century.
